The Lazarus Project
The Lazarus Project offers individual and group counseling services, as well as peer support groups for veterans. They allow veterans to speak with others who have “been there, done that” and understand what it’s like to have the same feelings and challenges. We also strive to strengthen and support the families and friends of veterans by offering them individual counseling and support groups. Our belief is that by strengthening and supporting the families and friends who struggle to live with and love those veterans, we can begin the healing and strengthen the community that will need to be able to unbind these veterans and let them live again. These services are provided at low or no cost, and no insurance is required. We are a non-profit organization funded through grants and private donations.
Mission Statement
The Lazarus Project’s mission is to serve as a resource for the community to ease the readjustment and reintegration of military members returning from our current wars, their families, as well as veterans from previous eras. We hope to do this through either providing the services required, by assisting the community at large in finding these services through other agencies, or facilitating the creation of programs by individual organizations.
"Unbind him and let him go." John 11:44
Nearly everyone who experiences combat finds that the stench of death clings to them. Many arrive in their hometown but still do not feel as if they have "come home". Too many veterans experience guilt, anger, fear, difficulties being able to trust, sleeplessness and isolation, all normal responses to the craziness of combat. All of these bind, constriction slowly, just as the cloths of death bound the biblical Lazarus. Jesus told the people standing around - the community - to go to Lazarus and unbind him - NOT wait for Lazarus to come to them, but to surround him and help him remove that which was binding him and keeping him from living.
Phase One - Groups
Starting This Summer! With the Lazarus Project's first phase, we propose to strengthen, support and offer groups to the families and friends of veterans. Our belief is the by strengthening and supporting the families and friends who struggle to live with and love those veterans, we can begin the healing and strengthen the community that will need to be able to unbind the veterans and let them live again.
